Can I Work Directly with a Car Carrier?

09/18/2012

Some people think they can save money and hassle by working directly with a car carrier over an auto transport broker. (See How the Car Shipping Industry Works for more details.) While some car carrier will work directly with consumers, there are two common challenges with working directly with a car carrier.

1) Comparing Prices

It can be difficult to find a car carrier that is traveling your route let alone several in order to compare prices. And, while you may believe you are getting a lower price when going direct to the carrier, some carriers charge you more when they are responsible for the paperwork and have to deal directly with the customer.

2) Customer Service

Most carriers get their shipments through auto transport brokers and other large volume shippers. So, many smaller and medium-sized carriers may not be used to dealing individual customers who do not have any experience with shipping vehicles. In addition, you would be responsible for things like making sure a carrier’s insurance and authority are up-to-date.

So while you can work directly with a car carrier, it may not save you any money and could create additional hassles. If you use a reputable auto transport broker, you get someone who will work to find you the best deal for shipping your car and make the whole process go more smoothly.
