What Are My Payment Options for Auto Transport?

02/08/2011

Many of us have gotten used to using our credit or debit cards for purchases large or small; however, many auto transporters do not accept credit or debit cards for payment upon delivery of your vehicle. Payment options can vary by auto transporter, so be sure to check with them.

Most auto transporters require a deposit or the full amount due when you initially reserve your auto transport. This payment can typically be made by credit or debit card, although they may charge a fee. Some companies also accept personal checks for deposits. When your vehicle is delivered, you typically are required to pay the driver of the car carrier any balance due with cash or a cashier’s check.

Why are you required to pay with cash or a cashier’s check? There are two primary reasons:

  1. Because of the low margins of the business and the size of the transactions, most auto transporters do not want to pay the 2.5-3.5% fee to the credit card companies.
  2. Auto transporters want to avoid any disputes with the credit card companies. Once you have your vehicle back, the auto transporter has very little recourse if the credit card company reverses the charges.

So, whenever you are ready to ship your vehicle, be sure to check with your auto transporter to understand what payment options you have.
