Do I Need My Registration, Title or Other Paperwork for Auto Transport?

Actually, you do not need to provide any paperwork for car shipping . The auto hauler will provide you with a document when they pick up your vehicle. It is typically called the Bill of Lading or Original Inspection Report.

This document is very important, because it shows pick-up and delivery information, current mileage and the condition of your vehicle upon pickup. You will want to inspect your vehicle along with the driver to identify any pre-existing scratches, dents, cracked glasses/mirrors, and general paint condition. You will be required to sign a copy of this document to show you agree with the driver’s inspection.

Be sure to keep a copy of this document for when you receive delivery of your vehicle. You can compare the condition recorded during pickup with the condition at delivery. (See Inspecting a Vehicle During Delivery for more details.) Be sure to note on the Bill of Lading any damage that may have occurred to your vehicle and have the driver sign it. Without the signature of the driver, it is difficult to file a claim for any damages.

If there is no damage, which is typically the case, just sign the bill of lading for receipt of your vehicle. Even though damage is rare, it is a good idea to check with your auto insurance agent to be sure your vehicle is covered during auto transport. This can provide you with secondary coverage in case any damages cannot be recovered from the carrier.
