There Was a Problem with My Car Shipment. What Should I Do?

12/17/2013

The majority of car shipments are a problem-free experience. However, occasional mishaps do occur: such as damage during transit or a significant delay. The best way to settle a dispute is with good documentation and communication. See our posts on How to Prepare for Auto Transport Pickup and What to Do When Your Vehicle is Delivered for tips on good documentation.

If you do have a problem, try to work it out with the auto transport company. In most cases, as long as they feel you are willing to be fair with them, auto transport companies will work with you to resolve the problem. Be firm, but reasonable.

If this approach doesn’t work, consider filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org ) in the city in which the car transport company is located. There is also the U.S. Department of Transportation (www.dot.gov ) which regulates car transport companies. However, the DOT will usually not get involved until after you have a court judgment against the car transport company (e.g. in small claims court).
