What Paperwork Do I Need When Shipping My Car?

02/25/2014

You are not required to provide any paperwork when shipping your car . The only document needed is the Bill of Lading or Original Inspection Report, which the auto hauler provides when picking up your vehicle.

This document is important because it shows pickup and delivery information, current mileage, and the condition of your vehicle upon pickup. For this reason, you should inspect your vehicle along with the driver to identify any pre-existing dents, scratches, cracked glass/mirrors, and general paint condition. To show your agreement with the driver’s inspection, you are required to sign a copy of it.

Be sure to keep a copy of the Bill of Lading and have it with you when accepting the delivery of your vehicle. This way, you can compare the condition of the vehicle with the condition that was recorded prior to shipment. (See Inspecting a Vehicle During Delivery for more details.) If you notice any damage, be sure to document it on the Bill of Lading and have the driver sign it. Without the driver’s signature, it is difficult to file a claim for damages.

If there is no damage, simply sign the Bill of Lading for receipt of your vehicle.
