When you ship a vehicle, you do not need to provide any paperwork, such as the title or registration for your vehicle. The driver of the car carrier provides you with paperwork when he or she picks up your car. This document is typically called the Bill of Lading or Original Inspection Report.
The Bill of Lading shows pickup and delivery information. You want to confirm this information is correct. Then, the driver of the car carrier records the current mileage and the condition of your vehicle. You should inspect your vehicle along with the driver to identify any pre-existing scratches, dents, cracked glass/mirrors, and general paint condition. You must sign the Bill of Lading to show you agree with the driver’s inspection. The driver should give you a copy.
Have your copy of the Bill of Lading ready when your vehicle is delivered. This allows you to compare the condition recorded during pickup with the condition at delivery. (See Inspecting a Vehicle During Delivery for more details.) Be sure to note on the Bill of Lading any damage that may have occurred to your vehicle and have the driver sign it. Without the signature of the driver, it is difficult to file a claim for any damages.
If there is no damage, which is typically the case, you sign the Bill of Lading to confirm receipt of your vehicle.
