Is Enclosed Auto Transport Worth the Extra Money?

11/16/2010

For the vast majority of people shipping their vehicles, it is not worth an extra 25-50% more for an enclosed carrier. For example, is it worth an extra $250 to ship your car from New York to Florida in order for your car to avoid the elements and slightly reduce the likelihood of getting any scratches or dings? (The likelihood is pretty low even on an open carrier.)

The types of vehicles that frequently choose to pay the extra for enclosed auto transport, include:

  • Restored antique cars (e.g. 1957 Chevy, 1938 Ford Coupe)
  • High-end sports cars (e.g. Maserati, Lotus)
  • Luxury vehicles (e.g. Rolls Royce, Bentley)

However, some people do choose to ship more “ordinary” cars via enclosed carrier. Ultimately, it is your decision as to whether the extra cost is worth it to you.

Most auto transport companies do offer enclosed as an option. However, if you are shipping a classic or high-end vehicle, you may want to choose to work with a company that specializes in those types of vehicles.
