How Do I Deal with Any Damage When Shipping?

12/20/2011

Most car shipments occur without incident. However, damage does occasionally occur. So, it is good to know what to do if you suspect any damage.

The first step is to carefully inspect your car upon delivery. Be sure to do it in a well-lighted area. It is critical that you identify any damage before the driver departs. Check for dents, scratches, broken glass, and other possible damage. Some areas that are frequently overlooked are the roof and under the front and rear bumpers. Be sure to inspect these areas carefully.

If there is any damage to your car, record the damage on the Bill of Lading and have the driver of the car carrier sign it. If you do not have the driver sign the document before departing, you have little recourse for repairs or reimbursement.

Once you have the signed Bill of Lading, contact your car shipping company. Be prepared to provide them with a copy of the Bill of Lading and photographs of the damage. If the damage is significant, they may also request that you get a quote or two from body shops for repairing the damage. A reputable car shipping company will resolve the matter with you as quickly as possible.

In the event that a car shipping company is not responding to your claims, you can file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau located in the company’s primary location. That can motivate the car shipping company to resolve the matter quickly.
