How Many Cars Are Shipped Each Month?

As people consider shipping their car, many are curious about how many vehicles are shipped every month in the US. We consulted with CentralDispatch, our sister company that runs the largest US marketplace for car shipping professionals (not for consumers). Approximately 180,000 vehicles were shipped in the US and Canada during September 2012 and over the past 12 months, approximately 2 million vehicles were shipped. These numbers include only used vehicles and not any new vehicles being shipped to dealers.

Who is shipping all of these vehicles?

  • Individuals who are relocating to a different part of the country
  • Someone who purchased a car in a different location, through sites like eBay Motors
  • Used car dealers who buy vehicles from auctions and ship them to their location
  • Salvage yards buying inoperable vehicles and shipping them to their location
  • Snowbirds who head south during the winter and north for the summer
