What If My Car is Damaged While Shipping It?

02/26/2013

The vast majority of vehicles shipped each month are delivered without any damage. However, damage happens occasionally. So, it is good for you to be prepared when shipping your car.

The first step is to inspect your car upon delivery. Be sure to inspect it in a place that’s well-lit enough to see any damage. (Unfortunately, some auto haulers are known to deliver a vehicle after dark if there is damage you may overlook in poor lighting.) Look for dents, scratches, broken glass, and any other potential damage. Don’t forget to inspect the roof and under the front and rear bumpers. These areas are frequently overlooked.

If there is any damage, record it on the Bill of Lading. Any damage that was identified by the driver at the time of pick-up should already be recorded. Of course, you should only report new damage to your vehicle. After any damage is recorded on the Bill of Lading, have the driver of the car carrier sign it before they depart. This is critical, because you have little recourse if the driver does not sign the document before departing.

After you have a signed copy of the Bill of Lading, contact your car shipping company. Provide them with a copy of the Bill of Lading (be sure to keep a copy for yourself) plus photographs of the damage. The car shipping company may also request body shop estimates for repairs.

A reputable shipping company will resolve the matter with you as quickly as possible in order to avoid any complaints or bad reviews. However, if your auto transport company does not respond to your claims, you can file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau located in the company’s primary location.
