Can I Put Stuff in My Car When I Ship It?

10/19/2010

Paying good money to ship your car and seeing it empty may tempt you to fill your car with stuff. However, you should resist the temptation to include anything extra in your car when shipping it. Most auto transport companies prohibit the inclusion of personal items or have a 100 lb. limit. Putting stuff in your car during auto transport can cause a number of problems:

  1. Items can be easily stolen from your vehicle interior or trunk while in transit.
  2. Auto haulers may refuse to transport your vehicle with personal items inside, because most are not licensed or insured for transporting household items.
  3. The additional weight of extra items in your car can put car carriers over weight limits. This puts auto haulers at risk of significant fines and delays. Your auto hauler may choose to not transport your vehicle rather than risk running overweight.

So, resist the temptation and make other plans for getting your stuff between locations. Of course, there is no need to empty the glove box or remove the ice scraper when shipping your vehicle, just don’t add anything extra to your vehicle.
