Are Cars Insured During Auto Transport?

11/23/2010

Your vehicle should be insured during auto transport. To get and maintain their license from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, auto transporters are required to be insured. However, just as there are some uninsured motorists, there can also be uninsured auto transporters.

As your vehicle is probably one of your most valuable assets, it is worth the extra effort to be sure your auto transporter is insured. It is a good idea to get a copy of their current insurance coverage. Don’t just ask for it verbally. Make sure you get a copy of the actual policy.

Review the policy to make sure it is still in force. Then check whether their insurance is primary or secondary to yours. What is the deductible, if any? While many insurance policies include a deductible, remember that the deductible will need to come out of the auto transporter’s pocket. So, the higher the deductible, the riskier it is.

In addition, your auto insurance policy may also provide coverage while in transit. Check with your insurance company to understand your coverage.

Finally, any personal belongings are unlikely to be covered if damaged or stolen. So, it is best to not include any. See the post about including personal belongings during auto transpor t for more details.
